Earth

Earth shows day/night and monthly satellite views of the Earth with terrain shading while animating through the last few days of global cloud coverage (3D clouds). The Earth shading has been designed to accurately show the current locations of first-light, last-light, sunrise and sunset.

Earth at that time. You can change the timezone to see the local time in that timezone. You can point your mouse to any location on the Earth to show information for that location like: terrain altitude or sea depth, local timezone, local time, magnetic variation and the times of first-lightsunrisesunset and last-light(times are displayed as local time in the timezone you selected).

There are many versions of Earth: (requires Java)

  • unsigned Earth applet which can be run in a web pagepplication versions of Earth to be installed on your computer. Once installed they can be run without Internet connection (but can't show latest cloud). See http://planOfile.com/Earth.html for install instructions.

    • small Earth that will run on low quality computers.

      • longer cloud animations can be viewed by the following versions. Note that each day has 8 cloud images and each downloaded cloud image is around 100K bytes

        • week animates through the previous week of cloud

        • fortnight animates through the previous 2 weeks of cloud

        • month animates through the previous 4 weeks of cloud

    • normal Earth that will run on most average quality computers. This provides a better quality Earth and clouds

      • longer cloud animations can be viewed by the following versions. Note that each day has 8 cloud images and each downloaded cloud image is around 300K bytes

        • week animates through the previous week of cloud

        • fortnight animates through the previous 2 weeks of cloud

        • month animates through the previous 3 weeks of cloud

    • high quality Earth that will run on high performance computers. This provides the best quality Earth view and cloud images.

      • longer cloud animations can be viewed by the following version. Note that each day has 8 cloud images and each downloaded cloud image is around 550K bytes 

        • week animates through the previous 5 days of cloud

  • low memory, small borderless Earth desktop gadget which can be left running on your desktop all the time. This can also be installed on Google Desktop: Google Desktop Gadget

  • Click on your event link to see all attendees trips on your event map

    • Visually presented events are much easier to coordinate

For example, view the 2007 Great Air Rally Event link. (This shows the complex interaction of many aircraft coming from different directions, trying to synchronise their flights to arrive at one destination airport.)

  • See flight planner to run the program

  • All planOfile maps show latitude, longitude, terrain height, magnetic variation, first-light, sunrise, sunset and last-light times at the cursor position. They also show time and allow selection of any timezone.
