planOfile Overview
Page 2

planOfile combines a number of different programs to help plan and share trip information on common map browsing programs like:

  • Google Earth

    • Your trips will be stored on your computer (for complete privacy), with the option to upload to the planOfile share server.

  • Google Maps (see SRFC for an example)

    • Your trips can only be saved to the planOfile share server, not stored on your computer.

  • planOfile Earth

    • low memory web launch-able 3D Earth browser

    • shows current global cloud cover and day/night view of the Earth

    • shows the times of first-light, sunrise, last-light and sunset for any location on Earth using the user selectable date and timezone

  • planOfile Maplet (see example)

  • NASA World Wind

You can embed planOfile in your own web page (e.g. SRFC). You can also generate links to events or trips for sending to your friends or putting on a web site, forum, blog etc... The default links go to the planOfile site, planOfile, but you can create links that go to your own site, e.g. SRFC. That is, the same data can be shown on almost any web page running planOfile, there is no need for them to link back to the planOfile site.

An example of trip collaboration is the March 2007 Great Air Rally. This shows an actual event where different participants would add their own trips and waypoints associated with the event. Viewing the map shows the information added (and updated) by participants, making it easy for event organisers (as well as the participants) to see who will be where and when. This type of system removes some work load from the event organisers while increasing the accuracy of the information provided. The participants add/update their data directly in the planOfile system instead of calling/emailing the organisers where their information can potentially be copied incorrectly or even forgotten.
